SHIPPENSBURG: Pizza has long been a staple of college students everywhere. And why not? It’s delicious, its satisfying, it’s cheap, and convenient. But is all pizza created equal. We put three national pizza chains to a head to head test in this weeks College Consumer Report.
Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa Johns all deliver to the Shippensburg area. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza from each establishment at the same time using their convenient online ordering.
Pizza Hut was the last pie to arrive taking just over a half an hour. The entrée cost $15.78 plus tip. What really set Pizza Hut apart from its competitors is the versatility you had when crafting your meal. We were able to select a custom crust and add a sauce drizzle for no additional cost. Of the many options we decided on a bacon and cheese stuffed crust with garlic butter, Italian seasoning, and Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. The actual crust was phenomenal and provided a delicious twist for our pallets on an otherwise boring pizza. The crust of the pie was rather thin and mushy.
Dominos didn’t have all the bells and whistles that we could choose from with Pizza Hut but all in all delivered a very good final product. The savory sauce was topped with a very flavorful blend of cheeses that combined nicely. This pizza was cooked just right with a gooey cheese and crispy pepperoni. The crust under the toppings was flaky and light yet still held its shape. The crust around the outside was doused with a mix of garlic butter and seasonings that ended the slice on a good note. Dominos total was $16.58 and took about 25 minutes to arrive.
For a seemingly whopping $19.34 Papa Johns had a pepperoni pizza at our front door within an astounding 15 minutes making it by far the most convenient. Unfortunately, the downfall was the actual pizza. Papa Johns didn’t provide much more flavor than a frozen pizza from a grocery store. The saving grace of this establishment is hands down their delectable garlic sauce that ended up being put on the other two pies as well since it was so tasty.
At the end of the day we couldn’t say anything bad about the flavor profile of the Domino’s pizza making them the winner of our golden pie contest. Pizza hut took a close second with their to die for stuffed crust and great value. Papa Johns brought up the tail since the best part about this pizza delivery establishment wasn’t even their pizza.
