Clotheslining awareness of sexual assault

SHIPPENSBURG – Shippensburg University’s Women’s Center is marking Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a line full of clothes.

But they aren’t just any clothes. They are t-shirts made by victims of sexual assault and they are decorated with the victims’ stories. The shirts and the line are designed to bring awareness of the issue and to educate anyone who will stop and read about them.

Women’s Center Director, Stephanie Erdice, says the center has been hanging the line in the first week of each April for the last four years. It’s a collaborative project with nearby Wilson College.

“Both institution sponsor some t-shirt designing and decorating workshops.” Erdice says the Clothesline Project started in the 1990’s and has expanded through the years.

The Clothesline Project is just one of the many sexual assault awareness events the Women’s Center is sponsoring this month. Earlier in the week, students, faculty and supporters joined on campus in the national Take Back the Night campaign.
