SHIPPENSBURG—On Tuesday, most Ship students tried to stay indoors as much as possible during the never-ending rain. As more rain clouds rolled in, the women’s soccer team threw on their white uniforms, laced up their cleats and headed for the field to take on Bloomsburg. Not allowing the rain to distract them, the Raiders continued their warm ups while the rain picked up.
The first half was a hard-fought battle. Although Ship was defensive for most of the half, but one opportunity paid off. Freshman Tori Mills raced down the right sideline and towards the goalie, bringing all of the defenders with her. Mills passed back to senior Haley Jones who took a shot outside of the box. The high ball soared over the goalie’s finger tips and dropped right below the crossbar for her first career goal. Ship took the 1-0 lead with 4 minutes left in the half.
The second half was all defense for the Raiders. As the Huskies continued to push for a tying goal, Ship’s defense did not let up. Bloomsburg took 10 shots on goal in the second half. Ship only had 2. Ship came out with the win over Bloomsburg, 1-0, making it sophomore goalkeeper Leah Roy’s third shutout of the season.
Ship will host Gannon on Saturday at 5 p.m..
