The Shippensburg Red Raiders football team finished their season last week beat Mercyhurst 69-20. Finishing the season 8-3.
The Raiders started off the season with a lot of question the biggest at the quarterback position. That question quickly turned into a reliable strength as redshirt sophomore Ryan Zapoticky started off hot winning P-SAC east offensive player of the week. Leading the raiders to a 64-14 win over the Seton hill Griffins.
The Raiders would rely on the run and kicker Billy Dean to pull out a 20-13 win over Edinboro to push the raiders record to 2-0.
The red hot raiders were quickly cooled off when they traveled to California Pa. and fell behind early. The raiders would try to mount a late comeback but were thwarted on the last drive of the came and lost 34-26.
The Raiders continued to struggle losing a hard hitting P-sac east game to Bloomsburg 17-6 . The offense wasn’t able to put any touchdowns on the board the raiders fell to 2-2 on the season heading to ESU.
It looked as if the raiders season was heading down the tank falling behind 27-0 in the First half and trailing 41-14 late in the third but the resilient raiders bounced back. Mounting a furious 4th quarter comeback with a chance to win it with a field goal in the final minute. The kick was missed the two teams went on to play 5 overtimes , the Red raiders came out on top with a two point conversion to Jordan Harro that landed him on sportcenter.
The raiders used that momentum to carry them to five straight wins, putting them in sole possession of the p-sac east. Heading into a game vs. Kutztown that would clinch the state game.
The raiders did not show up to play losing 51-27 to Kutztown ending the raiders playoff hopes with one game left in the season.
Although the raiders were out of playoff contention they still had their seniors to play for vs. Mercyhurst. Which is exactly what they did jumping out to an early lead they wouldn’t give up. All five skilled position seniors found the endzone. Sending them off with a great last game and momentum for a red raiders team returning a lot of talent to carry into the offseason.
