SHIPPENSBURG– Junior Karl Lightner was honored twice in less than 24 hours; PSAC Wrestler of the Week Monday night and Super Region 1 Wrestler of the Week Tuesday morning. He’s the first to earn regional honors for Shippensburg this season, and joined Evan Ramos as the second to earn PSAC honors.
“I’m honored, but honestly it doesn’t really mean anything. It was a good week…the ultimate goal is to be an All-American, everything until then is just practice.”
Wrestling at 141 pounds this season, Lightner returned to action over the weekend with two victories. He’s been out since the end of December when he injured his right hand.
“At first I wasn’t really even sure if I was going to be back on the mat this year, but it all worked out.”
The first victory was a 15-6 major decision over Joey Miller of Mercyhurst (No. 7), second was a 4-3 decision over John Marotto who ranked number five in Super Region 1.
Lightner, one of the four reigning NCAA qualifiers last season, hopes to keep moving forward.
“For the most part, I feel good about Nationals. The only thing I can do now is train hard and get better every day to peak at the right time.”
Lightner is currently 4-2 this season.
