SHIPPENSBURG- The Shippensburg University Chess Club didn’t study abroad this winter break, they played abroad. A group of current students, one former and the clubs academic adviser, Dr. Kennedy, formed a team and traveled to Budapest for an international chess tournament.
Now that they have been invited to an international tournament and received some international rankings, they can participate in any other international tournament they want. Dr. Kennedy and current members are desperate to take advantage of the opportunity and are currently looking into some other European tournaments.
The team explored historic Budapest all while meeting and playing with some of the greats. Dr. Kennedy and Chess Club Treasurer, Jacob Painter, met chess legend, Pal Benko. Benko is a rock star within the chess community, he even has a chess moved named after him.
The chess team is always accepting new members, experienced and non-experience. If you’re interested email Jacob Painter at firstname.lastname@example.org or Dr. Kennedy at DIKenn@ship.edu. The club meets every Friday in the Fishbowl at 3:00.
