SHIPPENSBURG – With tax day coming up on April 18th, taxpayers should be aware of any deductions they may qualify for. Accounting and finance Professor James Benton spoke of some common deductions.
“Home owners have a mortgage interest deduction and property tax deduction,” said Benton. “Charitable deductions are big and out of pocket medical expenses may be deductible.”
Services from companies like H&R Block, Jackson Hewett and Liberty tax complete state and federal taxes for a fee. Students from Shippensburg University also hold a VITA program that helps low income tax payers with their taxes.
Tax forms can be picked up at a local library or completed online through the IRS website. Most students have W2 income, so the one page 1040 EZ tax form is ideal. Students with questions about their taxes can also go to their parents for guidance.
