BALTIC SEA – A pair of close encounters between a U.S. Destroyer and Russian fighter jets has caused concern from the Pentagon. Two unarmed Russian fighter jets flew extremely close to the U-S-S Donald Cook as it sailed in the Baltic Sea. According to a U.S. official one of the jets flew within 30 feet of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer’s superstructure. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest says the U.S. Embassy in Moscow has communicated formal concerns to the Russian government about the incident. Russia’s defense ministry maintained that it acted “in accordance with international rules.” A pentagon official said the destroyer had a polish helicopter on board, leading him to believe the Russians moves were intended to send a message to Poland.
