China preps for Lunar New Year

Millions of people set to fill the streets of China

January 26, 2017

Shippensburg, PA. – This weekend marks the year of the rooster in the Chinese Lunar calendar. The event will have light shows, shadow puppet plays, bonfires, and fireworks. The celebrations are expected to last for two weeks starting this weekend. Because of the large amount of people coming to witness these events, transpiration in the country is expected to be running slower then normal. Although China started using the Gregorian calendar in 1912, the Chinese New Year celebrates the ancient Lunar Calendar, which resets on the second new moon of the winter solstice. The Chinese New Year begins this Saturday.
