SHIPPENSBURG –The lavender graduation is a chance to celebrate the graduating seniors that identify in the LGBT community, or identify as allies.
This is the first of these ceremonies at Ship, but the lavender graduation takes place at about fifty other institutions.
Women’s center graduate intern, Andrew Melendez said, “What we know about the LGBT community is that they are at-risk students here, and at all institutions. They have lower rates of retention and graduation and so for somebody in the LGBT community to graduate is a big feat and something that we want to celebrate and acknowledge.
The ceremony awards certificates as well as lavender cords to be worn during commencement on May 13th.
The lavender graduation will take place at 7pm in the CUB MPR.
