SHIPPENSBURG — Walt Disney Studios announced that Beyonce Knowles will play the character of Nala in the upcoming live-action remake of The Lion King. The production is set for release in July 2019, according to ABC News. Nala is the love interest of the film’s protagonist, Simba.
The Lion King animated movie earned close to a billion dollars and spawned a successful broadway production that continues today. A live action remake is a way for studios to capitalize on the success of past animated productions, while pulling in adult audiences with nostalgia.
The all-star cast was announced in February and includes Donald Glover as Simba and James Earl Jones, who is reprising his role from the 1994 animated film as Mufasa.
