UTAH –Last week, President Trump slashed the size of two national monuments in Utah. Bears Ears National Monument has been reduced by 85% and the Grand Staircase-Escalante has been cut by 50%.
The administration has done this to create fewer restrictions and more development on these public lands.
Bears Ears contained the country’s last operating uranium mill. Plans to begin extensive extraction are underway.
This controversial decision is expected to set off legal issues that could put all American national monuments at risk. If the administration continues in this direction, all preserved public acres are open to oil and gas extraction, mining and logging.
Many have vowed to fight this decision in court.
