SHIPPENSBURG – Last Thursday, Shippensburg University’s English department hosted a poetry reading by two famous poets, Yona Harvey and Tony Medina.
Avid poetry readers and writers among other students gathered in Old Main Chapel to hear the two poets read their own works. It was an exciting time for young eager poets.
Harvey and Medina have very different writing styles, and they were almost opposites.
Yona Harvey was more soft spoken with a lot of repetition. Her topics focused around love and family.
Tony on the other hand, was a loud, and strong reader. He made you listen to what he was saying. He read from poems focusing on current events and race.
Students absorbed the art and some have even used this as a writing tool. One student, Amber J Pound, wrote poems in response to the poet as she was listening.
At the end of the reading, students stood in line to get the one-of-a-kind signature from the poets.
