Ship Serves Community with Adopt-a-Highway

By: Megan Talley

SHIPPENSBURG – Two SU organizations are saving the planet one plastic bottle at a time.

Adopt-a-Highway is an organization sponsored by PennDOT that allows organizations to pick up trash along a two mile road two times a year.

The Slate, SU’s newspaper, adopted Newville Road last year and hopes to keep it a tradition for years to come. Jenna Wise, the Slate’s Editor-in-Chief, says “that connection will help us reach more people as a news organization while also saving the environment.”

Kappa Kappa Psi, Ship’s Band Fraternity, also had their fall cleanup last weekend on Baltimore Road. Avery Strohm, the Vice President of Service, says it “gives them the opportunity to help the community and not just the marching band.” The fraternity has owned the road for over eight years. This past Sunday, the group collected over eight bags of trash.
